Hydrosocial Stories

Water and Society through Art and Science

Here’s an instagram post describing the Hydrosocial Stories conference held at PSU on May 7, 2025.

Water Consonants

This piece was created by sampling water sounds along Eagle Creek, OR. The topography of the river creates filters for the water flow, much like the shapes of our mouths create filters for airflow. The shape of the river and the water flow create the same frequencies as consonants called fricatives. To create “Water Consonants” we used Praat (software typically used for analyzing speech sounds) to analyze water sounds, and then created beats using FL Studio.
